The Way You Defrost Food May Be Putting Your Family At Risk

Okay, you just got home from a busy day, kids are running amok, the pets are screeching for food, and you still have to do laundry before the day is over. Now is a pretty bad time to realize you forgot to take dinner out of the freezer this morning.

If this has been you, then you know the frustration that this timely error has just cost you, but what can you do? Luckily, there are a few ways to get the job done, and plenty of wrong ways too.

Let's see if you are putting food on your family's table safely!

Wrong: Hot Water

It seems like the fastest way to get this done right? Well, while that may be true, you are actually creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

Right: Cold Water

Note: This means water colder than room temperature!

You'll need to put the meat in a bowl so that it stays submerged in the cool water, allowing it to thaw quickly and safely. The temperature prevents bacteria from forming, but you'll need to change the water every 30 minutes to keep it that way.

Wrong: Countertop

You may think that you're correctly thawing dinner by leaving in room temperature, but unfortunatel, this is not the case.

Even this is too warm for meat to safely thaw. You also expose it to bacteria and contaminants that could be present on the countertop.

So what are the best ways to get dinner thawed?

Right: Refrigerator

This is by far the best way to make sure your dinner gets to the table safely. Unfortunately, it also takes the longer.

But the fridge allows your food to reach the proper raw temperature with little risk of bacteria multiplying.

Maybe: Microwave

Different health experts are divided on how safe microwaving frozen food is, and both sides offer good explanations.

While it can quickly thaw the product, it also creates a supercharged environment for bacteria. However, this can be avoided if the food is cooked immediately after thawing.
