Frozen was released about four years ago and has quickly become one of Disney's most popular movies. Fans couldn't get enough of Elsa, Anna and Olaf, so just last year, Disney announced they were creating a sequel to be released in 2019.
Since then there's been a flurry of speculation about the movie and its storyline. We know Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel will reprise their roles as Anna and Elsa respectively. We also know Josh Gad who stars as Olaf will have a more significant role to play.
Frozen has even inspired a Broadway musical which will be premiering in spring 2018. Perhaps, as a sign of how popular the film continues to be, the on-stage show is being directed by a Tony Award winning director with a cast comprising of veteran Broadway actors.
Frozen's director, Jennifer Lee, has revealed even more details about Frozen 2.
Elsa will have a new dress, presumably because she's now back to living in the castle. It could also be an incentive for parents to spend even more on merchandise, but I have to admit, a new dress would be a fun accessory to look forward to.
Lee also told media that Olaf will find a snowy girlfriend. In addition to this, she mentioned that there will be a powerful duet between the sisters, which will be as memorable as Elsa's 'Let It Go' from the first movie.
But just recently, the film's director spoke out on the direction she might be taking the animated classic in.
Ever since its release, some viewers have speculated that Elsa's struggles in the film were actually about her sexuality. Many believe the song 'Let It Go' was, in fact, a coming out song for the princess.
They point out parts of the lyrics, specifically the part that goes, "Conceal don't feel, don't let them know / Well now they know," and the lines, "It's funny how some distance / Makes everything seem small / And the fears that once controlled me / Can't get to me at all."
The discussion prompted a hashtag on Twitter called #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.
Even thought I'm straight and I hate the movie frozen i would definitely go and see the sequel if they #GiveElsaAGirlfriend because everyone needs to be represented and relationships aren't always a boy and a girl, Love is Love and representation matters👏🏽— Makiya Athey (@mkayyyxo) March 1, 2018
Supporters argued that Elsa having a girlfriend was a positive step for representation.
the possibility that disney may (however small the realistic possibility may be) #GiveElsaAGirlfriend makes child-me want to cry. if i had that representation as a kid i might have been spared the years of confusion and feeling of not belonging ❄️♥️— ellie (@stupefys) March 1, 2018
Another mused that seeing a female Disney character with a girlfriend as a child would have helped her to understand her own sexuality when she grew up.
Not everyone is on board though, with some fans of the film threatening to boycott it if Elsa's character is a lesbian.
What a terrible idea. The silent majority will kill the box office numbers. By all means, go nuts over the idea. #GiveElsaAGirlfriend— Philly (@PChippi1) March 1, 2018
After months of speculation, Lee finally weighed in on the argument.
"I love everything people are saying and people are thinking about with our film," the director said, "that it's creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people."
She went on to say, "It means the world to us that we're part of these conversations." When asked for more details on Elsa's sexuality, Lee was coy, choosing only to say, "Where we're going with it, we have tons of conversations about it and we're really conscientious about these things."
She also said she was open to all possibilities on Elsa and that she will listen to the character to tell her where and how she needs to be written in the sequel.
In the midst of the debate, there's another group of people who believe that Elsa is better off without any love interest at all. We have to admit, that's another great option that Disney can consider.
We're eagerly waiting to see which direction Jennifer Lee goes in with Elsa!
