Since 2005, Grey's Anatomy has become a weekly staple in the homes of most Americans.
With more than 300 episodes and counting, we've learned to laugh and cry with the characters, and felt like we've become close friends with the likes of Meredith Grey, Alex Karev, and Miranda Bailey.
But during the course of 15 seasons, we've lost several fan favorites too, such as Christina Yang, George O'Malley, and of course, Dr. McDreamy.
While it's rare to see former cast members return (since they're typically killed off), fans were thrilled when one of the show's most beloved actresses teased her potential return to the medical drama.
"The ball is in ABC Network's court."
But who's this mysterious actress?
It's none other than Sara Ramirez, who played the iconic role of orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres from seasons two to 12.
Although Ramirez is a series' regular on on CBS' Madam Secretary, she claims the the network is open to her returning to her Grey Sloan Memorial roots.
"For the record [CBS] has been nothing but gracious and generous to me. They are open to Callie coming back! The ball is in [ABC]"s court," the Tony Award-winning actress wrote.
Back in August, Grey's creator Shondra Rhimes said that producers were hoping to snag Ramirez for a cameo in season 14's finale, but her ties ABC's rival television statement prevented her from doing so.
"We tried. CBS has a hold of her. Because she is on another show, and we can't get her. But we love her. Always. This is her home. Come home, Callie," Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Callie needs to come back with Arizona."
While fans showed their enthusiasm over Ramirez's tweet, many said hoped her on-screen wife Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw) would be returning as well.
I believe that if Callie comes back, she will make many and many happy fans, as I will be !! But Arizona and Sofia too, because this couple is epic and if they came back I would be the happiest person in the world !!! #ARIZONACALLIEANDSOFIACOMEBACK— Monique (@Monique37712136) September 26, 2018
It would be great, but Callie needs to come back with Arizona. Otherwise it's not worth it to make her come back. We needs to see Calzona again @JessicaCapshaw— Crazygirl (@JLau2677) September 26, 2018
However, the return of the entire Torres-Robbins family may just be wistful thinking for some fans, as Capshaw and Sarah Drew (April Kepner) were let go at the end of season 14.
"I am sad to see her go."
Back in March it was revealed pair wouldn't be returning to the medical drama, with Drew telling the The Hollywood Reporter they were let go due to the high number of series regulars on the show.
"I was told that the show had too many characters and that they needed to downsize because they couldn't service all of the characters effectively," she explained.
"They didn't want any of us to be left in the background and not getting much of a story. Because there were so many series regulars, they needed to downsize and to find some characters that they felt like they could tie up their stories well."
While it was a shock to them both, Capshaw said in a statement that while she was "sad to see her go," she'll cherish the nine years on the program.
"For the past 10 years, I have had the rare privilege of not only playing Arizona Robbins, but also being madly in love with playing her."
"Arizona Robbins is kind, intelligent, funny, insightful, bold, playful, fierce and really good at her job. She was one of the first members of the LGBTQ community to be represented in a series regular role on network television. Her impact on the world is permanent and forever. Forever."
"I am grateful that I have gotten to bring her to life and for the life that she has brought to me," she continued. "I am sad to see her go, but I am consoled by the idea that she will continue to live on and on in all of our consciences and our imaginations. Shonda, thank you for the ride on this incredible roller coaster. With a heart full of love, Jessica."
While it's unlikely Capshaw will be returning to the show, our fingers are crossed that the producers will have a change of heart.
